New York, July 2: A daring rooftop stunt at the world-famous Empire State Building in New York City has sparked widespread shock after two individuals climbed to the top of the landmark, displayed a banner, and were later arrested by the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon. According to eyewitnesses, the two individuals breached security and made their way to the building’s antenna spire, where they unfolded a banner that read:
“When the power of love beats the power of love of power, the world knows peace.”
They later descended to a lower section of the structure, where they stood and reportedly made a marriage proposal to one another. The act quickly drew attention from onlookers and went viral across social media platforms.
Police soon arrived at the scene and took the individuals into custody. The suspects have been identified as Angela Nikolau and Ivan “Vanya” Beerkus, both widely known for engaging in extreme rooftop climbing activities, commonly referred to as “rooftopping.”
Investigators are currently working to determine how the pair managed to bypass the building’s strict security measures and access such a highly restricted area. Authorities confirmed that multiple charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
The couple is also internationally known for their high-risk climbs on skyscrapers around the world. Their activities were previously featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary “Skywalkers: A Love Story.”
Following the incident, reactions on social media have been mixed. While some viewed the act as a symbolic expression of love, many others strongly criticized it as reckless and illegal behavior that endangered lives.
City officials emphasized that such unauthorized and dangerous actions pose serious threats to public safety, warning that strict legal measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
