Mayor Adams steps back from active campaigning but remains on the ballot; warns voters about “unstable leadership.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his withdrawal from the 2025 mayoral race. Speaking to the press, he said, “I know I cannot continue my campaign.”
Adams’ decision comes amid mounting political and legal pressures. Declining voter support, funding challenges, and increased competition contributed to his move. Currently, he is trailing in the polls behind Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Despite stepping back, Adams will remain on the November ballot. He has not endorsed any other candidate. He also cautioned voters, “Be cautious of those who seek to lead with unstable ideals.”
Analysts describe this as a dramatic political setback for Adams, who was elected in 2021 as New York City’s second Black mayor. His withdrawal is expected to have significant implications on the local political landscape and reshape the dynamics of the remaining race.
