Former Governor cautions that federal oversight of NYC could increase if progressive policies take hold; Adams’s exit reshapes the race

by Shah J. Choudhury

New York | October 6, 2025: The New York City mayoral race took a dramatic turn this week as former Governor Andrew Cuomo, now running as an independent, issued a sharp warning about Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani.

Speaking on the popular talk show “The View,” Cuomo said:

“If Zohran Mamdani wins, it would be a gift to Donald Trump.”

Cuomo argued that Mamdani’s progressive, left-wing agenda could open the door for greater federal control over New York City, undermining the city’s autonomy and inviting political interference from Washington.

Cuomo: “We fought every day”

Recalling his time as governor during the Trump administration, Cuomo said:

“We fought every single day. For Donald Trump, someone like Mamdani is a political gift — he can use that extreme left image to strengthen his own narrative.”

He claimed that Mamdani’s policy proposals could destabilize city governance and lead to increased federal involvement in local affairs.

“New Yorkers should be afraid”

Cuomo further warned voters, saying:

“New Yorkers should be afraid, because Mamdani’s policies could take this city down a dangerous path.”

He also suggested that current Mayor Eric Adams’s decision to suspend his campaign reflected growing uncertainty within the Democratic establishment. Cuomo noted that with Adams stepping aside, the race has effectively become a head-to-head contest between him and Mamdani.

Election Landscape
Following Adams’s withdrawal, the spotlight is now on three main contenders — Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo, and Republican hopeful Curtis Sliwa.

Although Cuomo is a seasoned political figure, recent polls show Mamdani leading, particularly among younger and progressive voters. Mamdani has also secured backing from several prominent figures, including Governor Kathy Hochul and grassroots activist groups.

Cuomo, however, continues to face lingering scrutiny from his 2021 resignation amid sexual harassment allegations — a controversy that Mamdani’s campaign has subtly referenced during recent events.

Analysis: Political Warning or Strategic Move?

Political analysts suggest that Cuomo’s remarks are an attempt to reframe the mayoral race as a national ideological battle, not merely a local leadership contest.

One analyst noted
“Cuomo is positioning this race as a fight over who will shape the future of America’s cities — progressive movements or established governance.”

As the campaign intensifies, the election is shaping up to be a defining moment for New York’s political identity — and potentially for the Democratic Party itself.

Editorial Note
The New York City mayoral election has transcended local politics. What began as a contest for City Hall has now become a reflection of the nation’s struggle between progressive idealism and political pragmatism.
