With the slogan “Let the New Generation Be the Future Strength of the Diaspora”, the 39th annual FOBANA (Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America) Convention is set to take place from August 29 to 31 in the world-renowned Niagara Falls area.

Led by Shah Newaz and Gias Ahmed, two previously separate factions of FOBANA have now joined hands to organize this major event. In a press conference held at Nabanna Party Hall in Jackson Heights, New York, the organizers announced their united effort to return to the core mission of FOBANA: unity among the diaspora and the promotion of Bangladeshi culture and identity.

“We had misunderstandings in the past—but those are now resolved,” said Shah Newaz. “Let us rise above divisions and come together under one flag for the greater national interest.”
Gias Ahmed added, “Unity was the only way forward to fulfill the dreams of our diaspora community.”

Preparations are underway at a luxury venue in Niagara Falls. The three-day convention will feature seminars, symposiums, business networking events, youth-focused programs, and a vibrant cultural show featuring artists from both Bangladesh and the diaspora.

Other speakers at the press event included Mohammad Hossain Khan, Hasanuzzaman Hasan, Jubayer Dara, Fahad Solaiman, Moinul Haque Helal, Ali Imam, Khandakar Farhad, Nishan Rahim, and Md. Elin. The conference was moderated by FOBANA Executive Secretary Kazi Azmer.

The organizers also acknowledged the existence of two other FOBANA factions planning parallel events in Atlanta, Georgia, and Montreal, Canada. “We’re in early discussions with them as well,” said the hosts, expressing hope for future unity.

Founded in 1987 with its first convention in Washington, D.C., FOBANA has grown into one of the most respected platforms for Bangladeshi organizations in North America. Its mission includes uniting the diaspora, promoting Bangladeshi culture and heritage, improving community welfare through cultural and educational initiatives, and building bridges between Bangladesh and North America.

The organizers assured that this year’s convention will not only celebrate culture and community but also strengthen ties with the mainstream political and cultural landscape of the U.S. and Canada. A souvenir magazine will also be published, highlighting the convention’s programs and participants.

“We want the diaspora to rediscover the Bangladesh they left behind,” they said. “And we are committed to engaging our youth to carry the legacy forward.”
