New York, October 6, 2025 — Progressive Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani has become the center of attention in the upcoming New York City mayoral election. His ambitious tax and spending proposals have sparked intense discussion among policymakers, economists, and city residents alike.
Mamdani has pledged to launch $10 billion in new annual spending, primarily funded through increased taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations. According to his projections, around $9 billion would come from these new taxes, while the remaining amount would be generated through administrative efficiencies and improved management.
Key Proposals
Among Mamdani’s major plans are:
• Universal Child Care: Free, full-time child care for children aged six weeks to five years, with teachers and caregivers receiving competitive wages.
• Free Bus Service: Making city bus rides completely free for all residents.
• Community Safety Department: A $1.1 billion initiative to create a “public safety alternative” using mental health professionals and violence interrupters to supplement police efforts.
While his proposals have been praised for their social vision, many experts question their feasibility, noting that several initiatives would require approval from the New York State government and other state-controlled agencies.
Economic Concerns
Economists warn that Mamdani’s proposed tax increases could place heavy pressure on the city’s highest earners. Currently, the top 1 percent of households contribute about 41 percent of New York City’s total income tax revenue.
Raising local taxes could risk driving high-income residents and businesses out of the city, potentially destabilizing the tax base and limiting future budget flexibility.
Analysts also caution that if an economic downturn occurs, the city could face difficult choices—such as deep spending cuts or further tax hikes—to maintain essential services.

Although Mamdani has emerged as a strong progressive voice, his earlier support for the “#DefundTheNYPD” movement continues to draw criticism. Recently, he has shifted his tone, emphasizing a “community-based safety model” that works alongside law enforcement rather than against it.
