A 25-year-old man died from his injuries on Tuesday after a suspect opened fire into a crowd along the New York Caribbean Carnival parade route on Monday.
The suspect stood on the cement divider on Eastern Parkway near Classon Avenue and fired into the crowd of thousands who were watching the parade, police said.
The victim, later identified as Denzel Chan, was shot in the abdomen and four other people were injured. Police said the shooting was gang-related and an intentional act toward a group of people.
“I know one person died. Our hearts go out to the family members because you come out to celebrate, you don’t want to come out and have that violence that we’ve seen in the past. That parade has always attracted a small element of people who want to commit violence. We showed that when we come together, we can prevent that,” Mayor Eric Adams said.
“This was not random. This was an intentional act,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell. Police say they believe the shooting was gang-related.
Police said four males and one female between the ages of 16 and 69 were stuck by the gunfire. They are all said to be stable.
“Some people will say, okay, five people were shot. Let’s be clear. one nut shot five people,” Adams said. “We were just in that area. When you look at that one person, who we are going to find, who shot five people. You remove him from the equation, You’ve got hundreds of thousands of people that were out this weekend and really heard the call of a peaceful J’ouvert and a peaceful West Indian Day Parade. Really hats off to the teams. Our hearts go out to the family members.”
At least one person is still being sought. The suspect is described as a man in his 20s wearing all brown, oil/paint stains on the shirt, black bandana, and fled on foot Westbound on Classon Avenue.
