Five-story building collapses in Satya Niketan; 12 rescued alive as questions grow over construction and safety oversight

Fauzia J. Choudhury : At least seven people were killed after a five-story building collapsed in New Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, triggering a massive rescue operation that continued for nearly 27 hours.
Rescue teams recovered 12 people alive from the rubble before the operation was brought to an end Monday evening. The collapse occurred Sunday afternoon near the South Campus of the University of Delhi in the densely populated Satya Niketan neighborhood.
The building was reportedly being used primarily as accommodation for students and paying guests.
Teams from the Delhi Police, Fire Services and the National Disaster Response Force worked through the debris using heavy machinery, specialized rescue equipment and trained search dogs. Rescuers carefully removed large sections of the collapsed structure while searching for survivors.
Renovation work raises questions
The building was reportedly several decades old and had undergone renovation and construction work in recent months. It had reopened to students in August, although some work was reportedly still underway.
Preliminary reports have raised questions about whether water accumulation in the basement, excavation and ongoing construction activity may have weakened the structure. Authorities have not yet established the definitive cause of the collapse.
An investigation is underway to determine whether structural weaknesses, unauthorized construction, negligence or violations of building regulations contributed to the disaster.
Building owner arrested
Authorities have arrested the building’s owner in connection with the incident. His wife and son were also detained as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
Five officials responsible for safety oversight under the Delhi Municipal Corporation were suspended pending investigation.
A magistrate-level inquiry has also been ordered to examine the building’s construction history, renovation work, safety approvals and the role of regulatory authorities.
Fresh concerns over aging buildings
The tragedy has renewed concerns about the safety of aging and poorly maintained buildings across the Indian capital.
Heavy rainfall and water accumulation during the monsoon season can further weaken older structures, particularly when construction or renovation work is carried out without adequate structural safeguards.
Delhi authorities are now facing renewed pressure to conduct comprehensive safety inspections of buildings used by the public, particularly student accommodations, schools, nursing facilities and other high-occupancy structures.
Calls for stronger safety enforcement
The Satya Niketan collapse has raised broader questions about construction standards, building maintenance and government oversight in rapidly growing urban areas.
Officials and residents are calling for stronger enforcement of building regulations and tougher action against violations to prevent similar tragedies.
For the families of those killed, however, the immediate focus remains on mourning their loved ones.
The disaster serves as a stark reminder that weak enforcement, aging infrastructure and unsafe construction practices can turn an ordinary day into a devastating tragedy.
As investigators search for answers, the central question remains: Could this tragedy have been prevented?
