RED HOOK, Brooklyn (WABC) — Two Amazon workers are recovering after they were shot outside an Amazon fulfillment center in Brooklyn, according to officials.
The shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. Sunday outside the warehouse in Red Hook on Bay Street near Hicks Street. Officials said a 25-year-old woman was shot in the chest, and a 23-year-old man was shot in the shoulder.
Authorities believe the 23-year-old man was the likely intended target. Officials said he was walking from a nearby bus stop to the Amazon facility with his girlfriend, who also works at Amazon. She was not injured.
The 25-year-old woman was walking back to work from a nearby deli when she was shot, officials said. Loved ones described her as an innocent bystander in the shooting. A GoFundMe created for her had raised nearly $5,000 as of Monday.
Mercy Adames, an Amazon employee who was not at work when the shooting occurred, said she learned about the incident from friends who were there.
“My friends were here and they said they had like a mini lockdown just in case for everyone to be safe,” Adames said. “It’s crazy though I didn’t expect to hear that there would be a shooting here.”
Police are searching for two people who fled the scene in a white sedan after the shooting. No arrests have been made.
Thomas Kohler, who works in the warehouse-heavy Red Hook area, said he generally feels safe walking in the neighborhood at night.
“Generally, I don’t feel too concerned about walking around at night. I mean, living in the city, you always kind of have your head on a swivel,” Kohler said. “There’s not too much, like I’ve never been confronted in a way that feels hostile face to face or anything. The people around here are generally happy to help if you have a problem.”
