Tensions Rise in New York Over Hindu Nationalist Event as Jewish Congressional Candidate Faces Heckling

Salman J. Choudhury :

Tensions erupted during a protest outside Madison Square Garden as Jewish Democratic congressional candidate Brad Lander faced heckling and verbal attacks over his identification as a Zionist.

Lander had joined demonstrators protesting an event featuring Mohan Bhagwat, head of India’s Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a prominent Hindu nationalist organization. The event drew thousands of attendees to Madison Square Garden.

During the demonstration, some protesters confronted Lander, calling him a “Zionist” and demanding that he leave. He was also accused of being a “paid Zionist.” Other protesters intervened and attempted to calm the situation.

Lander tried to explain that he had come to participate in the protest himself. He identified himself as a Democratic candidate for New York’s 10th Congressional District and said he opposed the Hindu nationalist gathering taking place inside the arena.

The confrontation drew particular attention because of Lander’s own views on Israel and the war in Gaza. He has been sharply critical of the Israeli government’s policies and has described the war in Gaza as genocide. At the same time, Lander identifies as a liberal Zionist and supports Israel’s existence as a Jewish and democratic state.

Lander also strongly criticized the event at Madison Square Garden, describing it as a “fascist and hateful gathering.” He compared it with the infamous Nazi rally held at the same venue in 1939.

The incident has intensified an ongoing debate in New York over Israel, Zionism, the Palestinian conflict and antisemitism. The confrontation involving a Jewish politician who is critical of the Israeli government but still identifies as a Zionist has highlighted deep divisions within progressive political circles.

The episode has also raised broader questions about the distinction between legitimate political criticism and antisemitic rhetoric, particularly at demonstrations involving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
