NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — New York City will pause Tuesday morning to mark one year since a gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office building, killing four people, including NYPD Detective Didarul Islam.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch are expected to lead a first anniversary memorial ceremony honoring Detective Islam and the other victims of the July 28, 2025, shooting.
Tuesday also marks the enactment of the Aland Etienne Safety and Security Act, named in honor of security officer Aland Etienne, who was killed while trying to shut down the building’s elevators during the attack. The law establishes New York City’s first private-sector minimum wage law since 1964 and will raise the minimum wage for private security officers to $22.20 an hour beginning Jan. 1, 2027. The measure will also phase in employer-provided health benefits or a benefits stipend, along with paid vacation and paid holidays.
Detective Islam, 36, was working an off-duty security assignment in the building’s lobby when he became the first victim killed in the attack.
Authorities said the gunman, Shane Tamura, drove from Las Vegas to New York City carrying an assault-style rifle. Investigators said he intended to target the NFL headquarters but mistakenly went to the wrong floors inside the Park Avenue office tower.
After the deadly rampage, Tamura barricaded himself on the 33rd floor before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, served with the NYPD for three and a half years and was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. He was the father of two young children, and his wife was pregnant with their third child at the time of his death. He is remembered as the first NYPD officer of Bangladeshi descent killed in the line of duty.
Earlier this month, a Bronx street was renamed in Detective Islam’s honor.
Tuesday’s ceremony will remember Detective Islam’s service and sacrifice, as well as the lives of the three other victims killed in the shooting.
