At Least 14 Injured, Including MTA Workers and FDNY Firefighters; Major Subway Disruptions Snarl Manhattan Morning Commute

Salman J. Choudhury | New York : A fire aboard an MTA maintenance work train at Manhattan’s Astor Place subway station left at least 14 people injured, including eight MTA employees and six FDNY firefighters, while crippling service along one of New York City’s busiest subway corridors during Tuesday’s morning rush.

According to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the fire broke out at approximately 2:15 a.m. on a four-car vacuum work train used for track maintenance. Thick black smoke quickly filled the station and surrounding tunnels, prompting authorities to declare a second-alarm fire and dispatch more than 140 firefighters and emergency personnel to the scene.

The heavy smoke created a dangerous environment for both emergency responders and transit workers. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours while conducting search and rescue operations inside the smoke-filled tunnels. Several responders suffered smoke inhalation and minor injuries during the operation.

Officials said a northbound passenger train was approaching the area when the incident occurred, raising concerns of a potentially far more serious emergency. Emergency crews successfully evacuated passengers, and authorities confirmed that no subway riders sustained life-threatening injuries.

The fire severely disrupted service on the 4, 5, and 6 subway lines, forcing delays, reroutes, and temporary suspensions during the height of the morning commute. Thousands of commuters were left stranded or forced to seek alternative transportation as MTA crews worked to clear smoke, inspect tracks, and restore service.

Most of the injured—including transit workers and firefighters—were transported to nearby hospitals with smoke inhalation, heat exhaustion, and minor injuries. Officials said none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators from the MTA and FDNY have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the fire. Preliminary indications suggest a possible mechanical failure involving specialized maintenance equipment, although officials emphasized that the exact cause has not yet been determined.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety and reliability of New York City’s aging transit infrastructure. Transportation experts say that a fire involving a maintenance train inside one of Manhattan’s busiest subway tunnels highlights the urgent need for continued investment in infrastructure modernization, equipment safety, and emergency preparedness.

Tuesday’s incident also underscored the professionalism of first responders and transit personnel, whose rapid response prevented what officials say could have become a far more catastrophic event during one of the city’s busiest transit periods.
