The body of a 13-year-old boy was recovered today, a day after he went missing from the Kotbari-Gandhamati area of Cumilla city.
Ishiat Shahriar Opratim was the only son of KM Firoz Shahriar, a resident of Ward 24 in Kotbari-Gandhamati, and Dr Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Bangla Department at Comilla University.
He was a class-seven student at Comilla Border Guard Public School.
The body was spotted in the Sandanda area of the neighbouring Comilla University campus around 1:00pm.
Mahmudul Hasan Khan, a teacher in the Anthropology Department at Comilla University, confirmed the matter.
Contacted, Md Rakibul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Sadar Dakshin Police Station, said, “We are on the way to the spot.”
According to the family, Opratim left home on foot around 3:00pm yesterday and did not return.
His father later filed a general diary with Sadar Dakshin Police Station after the family failed to locate him.
After Opratim went missing, his mother, Dr Nahida, said in a Facebook post that police, the local administration, her students and colleagues were working together to find him. She also appealed to anyone with information about her son to immediately inform the authorities.
His father said Opratim was wearing a blue panjabi when he left home.
“We informed the police and filed a general diary. He went out with my iPhone to take pictures with his friends and did not return,” he said.
Nahida said the phone had remained switched off.
Earlier, Sadar Dakshin Police Station OC Md Rakibul Hasan said police had reviewed CCTV footage throughout the night as part of the search for Opratim.
