The United States bowed out of the FIFA World Cup after suffering a heavy 4–1 defeat against European powerhouse Belgium in the Round of 16. The loss not only disappointed millions of American fans but also shattered the hopes of the Bangladeshi diaspora across the country.
Following an impressive group-stage performance marked by skillful and energetic football, Team USA had advanced to the knockout round, raising expectations among supporters—especially within the Bangladeshi community in the United States. In cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Texas, large gatherings were organized in cafes, restaurants, and community clubs, where fans came together to watch the match on big screens. Many Bangladeshi expatriates passionately rallied behind the USA, hoping for a historic victory.
However, from the very beginning, Belgium’s fast-paced and aggressive style of play exposed serious weaknesses in the American defense. The hosts fell behind in the first half and struggled to regain control. Despite attempts to bounce back in the second half, Belgium’s precise counterattacks proved too strong, ultimately sealing a dominant 4–1 victory.
The magnitude of the defeat was difficult for fans to accept. Visible disappointment and sorrow were evident among Bangladeshi spectators who had gathered to watch the game.
Dalim Ahmed, a Bangladeshi expatriate who watched the match in Jackson Heights, New York, expressed his frustration, saying, “After watching the group-stage matches, I truly believed the USA would reach the quarterfinals. But today, against a strong team like Belgium, our defense completely collapsed. I never expected such a loss—it’s very painful.”
With the USA’s exit from the World Cup, a major chapter of football excitement for the Bangladeshi diaspora in America comes to an end. Although the dream of lifting the trophy has faded, the team’s fighting spirit in the group stage will remain memorable for fans.
