Cuomo Warns of Mass Exodus from NYC if Mamdani Becomes Mayor — Stakes High in Heated Mayoral Race

New York | October 21, 2025—The New York City mayoral race has entered its most heated phase yet, as former Governor Andrew Cuomo, now running as an independent, issued a stark warning about the city’s future under Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani. Speaking on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, Cuomo cautioned that Mamdani’s proposed policies could prompt a mass exodus of both residents and businesses, dramatically reshaping the economic landscape of America’s largest city.
“You keep taxing businesses and wealthy people in New York City, there will be nobody left,” Cuomo said, emphasizing that Mamdani’s proposals could threaten the city’s fiscal stability.

Mamdani’s Policies Under Scrutiny
Zohran Mamdani, 33, who defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary earlier this year, identifies as a democratic socialist.
His platform includes:
• Significant tax increases on the wealthy
• Rent freezes and tenant protections
• Free or subsidized public services, including transportation and food programs
Supporters argue these policies aim to reduce economic inequality and improve the lives of working-class and marginalized communities. Critics, however, including Cuomo, contend that such proposals are unrealistic and could lead to economic instability, driving businesses and affluent residents out of the city.

Cuomo Questions Experience and Competence
Cuomo has repeatedly questioned Mamdani’s experience, pointing to his legislative record as an Assemblyman. According to Cuomo, Mamdani has sponsored only three bills and has one of the lowest attendance records in the New York State Assembly.
“Experience matters. Running a city like New York is not about ideology alone — it requires management skills, fiscal discipline, and the ability to respond to crises,” Cuomo warned.
He further suggested that without proper leadership, New York could face significant challenges in attracting businesses, maintaining services, and managing the city’s large population.

Election Dynamics
The November 4, 2025 mayoral election features three key candidates:
• Andrew Cuomo (Independent) — Former Governor, critic of Mamdani’s socialist policies
• Zohran Mamdani (Democrat) — Democratic Socialist and former Assemblyman
• Curtis Sliwa (Republican) — Media personality and law-and-order advocate
Early polls suggest a tight race, particularly in swing boroughs like Queens and Brooklyn, where progressive voters and moderates are divided. Mamdani has gained traction among young voters, activists, and advocates for progressive reforms, while Cuomo is positioning himself as the pragmatic choice capable of maintaining the city’s economic stability.

Political Implications
Analysts warn that the election could have long-term consequences beyond the mayor’s office:
1. Economic Impact: If Mamdani implements his proposals, tax hikes and expansive public programs could affect businesses and investor confidence.
2. Democratic Party Dynamics: Cuomo’s independent candidacy risks splitting the centrist and moderate vote, potentially weakening the Democratic base in NYC.
3. National Attention: New York City, as a cultural and financial hub, will draw nationwide scrutiny. The outcome may influence progressive politics across the U.S., especially regarding urban governance and socialist policies.

Public Opinion and Voter Sentiment
Residents have expressed mixed reactions:
• Supporters of Mamdani praise his commitment to social equity, housing protections, and affordable public services.
• Critics fear fiscal instability, business flight, and increased taxes, echoing Cuomo’s warnings.
• Many voters are concerned about the city’s ability to balance progressive ideals with practical governance, particularly in the post-pandemic economic recovery.

Subheadline/Bullet Highlights:
• Cuomo warns that Mamdani’s socialist policies could drive residents and businesses out of NYC.
• Mamdani emphasizes equity, rent control, and free public services as core platform pillars.
• The election is scheduled for November 4, 2025, with early voting expected to begin in mid-October.
• Analysts suggest the race could reshape both the city’s economy and Democratic Party politics.

Reporter’s Insight:
The 2025 NYC mayoral race represents more than just a local election. With candidates offering dramatically different visions for the city, voters face a choice between pragmatic governance and progressive reform. How New Yorkers respond could set the tone for urban politics nationwide for years to come.
