As the New York City mayoral race intensifies, Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani has taken a direct swipe at former Governor Andrew Cuomo, accusing him of remaining silent in the face of the recent federal indictment against Attorney General Letitia (Tish) James.
During a public rally on Friday, Mamdani said Cuomo failed to show courage by not mentioning James or former President Donald Trump in his statement.
“Andrew Cuomo made a statement yesterday where he didn’t even mention the name of Tish James, and much less the name Donald Trump,” Mamdani said.
“If you are unwilling to do so today, how will you stand up to him tomorrow?”
Cuomo’s Response
Former Governor Cuomo, who has been weighing a political comeback, condemned the misuse of prosecutorial power but avoided naming any individuals.
“It is wrong when Trump’s DOJ does it, and it is wrong when a Democrat does it,” Cuomo said. “Weaponizing justice for political gain must be condemned universally.”
Political Implications
The issue has added new tension to the 2025 New York City mayoral contest, where Mamdani is positioning himself as a bold, progressive voice unafraid to challenge the establishment.
Mamdani’s defense of Letitia James — who once endorsed him — underscores his alignment with New York’s progressive wing, while Cuomo’s measured response reflects a more cautious, centrist approach.
Analysts say the contrasting reactions highlight a growing ideological divide within the Democratic Party, as candidates navigate how to respond to politically charged legal cases ahead of the mayoral election.
