July 1, 2025: July 1 is not just a date on the calendar for Bangladesh—it is a wound etched into the nation’s collective memory. On this day in 2016, the unthinkable happened. A group of armed militants stormed into the upscale Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, Dhaka, and turned an evening of peace into a night of terror.
In the deadliest terrorist attack in Bangladesh’s history, 22 innocent lives were taken—including 17 foreign nationals, 5 Bangladeshis, and 2 brave police officers. The attack sent shockwaves far beyond the borders of Bangladesh, making international headlines and shaking the conscience of the global community.
Tribute to the Fallen
We remember, with profound respect, the lives lost on that night—people who had dreams, families, and futures.

We must carry forward a message of love against hatred,
Peace against violence.”
They were students, educators, artists, parents, and professionals. We didn’t just lose individuals—we lost promise, brilliance, and humanity.
What Happened That Night
On the evening of July 1, 2016, around 8:45 PM, five gunmen entered Holey Artisan Bakery and took diners and staff hostage. The standoff lasted over 12 hours. The next morning, on July 2, Bangladeshi commandos launched Operation Thunderbolt and successfully neutralized the attackers.
Among the fallen were:
• 17 foreigners (including Italians, Japanese, Indians, and Americans)
• 5 Bangladeshi nationals
• Police officers who showed extraordinary bravery: Salahuddin Khan and Rajib Choudhury
Terror Has No Religion
The Holey Artisan attack reminded us that extremism does not represent faith. It is the enemy of humanity.
The government and security forces responded swiftly, launching a nationwide crackdown on militant networks. But while enforcement is essential, true resistance must come through education, empathy, and awareness.
What We Must Do
Educate our youth on the true values of religion, peace, and coexistence
Promote tolerance and diversity through families, schools, and media
Fight extremism not just with weapons, but with wisdom and unity
Never Again. Never Forgotten.
The Holey Artisan tragedy was more than a moment of terror.
It was a wake-up call, a national test, and a moral reckoning.
Let us not forget that night. Not only to mourn but to learn.
