Mamdani Secures Second Cross-Endorsement in Battle to Unseat Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

In a significant show of progressive unity, Queens Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani has received his second cross-endorsement in the race to become New York City’s next mayor, intensifying his campaign to unseat former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani’s latest endorsement comes from former Bronx Assemblymember Michael Blake, joining an earlier alliance with Brooklyn Comptroller Brad Lander. The three have formed a “ranked-choice coalition,” urging voters to rank them as their top choices in the June 24 Democratic primary.

Ranked-Choice Strategy: “Unite to Defeat Cuomo”

In coordinated campaign messages, Mamdani and Lander are asking supporters to rank each other first and second, seeking to pool votes and outmaneuver Cuomo in the final count under NYC’s ranked-choice voting system.

“Together, we can stop Cuomo,” Mamdani declared during a campaign event in Jackson Heights.
“We’re not here to divide progressives—we’re here to unite them.”

Blake echoed this sentiment in his video endorsement, stating,

“This moment needs courage, clarity, and coalition. That’s why I’m backing Zohran and Brad.”

Fiery Debate Sets the Tone

During the final televised debate, Cuomo attacked Mamdani’s qualifications, saying:

“He’s never led a union, never run a city agency, and he doesn’t understand executive government.”

Mamdani hit back with equal force, accusing Cuomo of corruption and elitism:

“I may not have resigned in disgrace. I never gutted Medicaid. I never funneled billions away from public transit.”

The sharp exchange energized progressive voters, many of whom have been seeking an alternative to Cuomo’s return to public office.

Endorsements and Ground Momentum

With Blake’s endorsement, Mamdani now leads a progressive trio, further supported by:
• Justice Democrats and Democratic Socialists of America
• Dream PAC, which launched the “Don’t Rank Evil Andrew” campaign
• Vocal support from figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who recently called Cuomo “the past clinging to power”

The endorsements may significantly shift voter behavior in the final days leading up to the election.

Cuomo Still Leads—But Vulnerable

Cuomo remains a formidable candidate, backed by over $5 million in Super PAC funding, deep donor networks, and name recognition. However, recent polling shows his support softening, especially among younger and working-class voters.

Progressive strategists believe that a ranked-choice consolidation between Mamdani and Lander could push one of them past Cuomo on the final ballot count.

What’s at Stake
• Zohran Mamdani represents a bold, democratic socialist vision focused on housing, MTA reform, and anti-corruption.
• Cuomo, attempting a political comeback, positions himself as a “crisis-tested leader” with experience.

As New Yorkers prepare to cast their votes, the choice is increasingly clear:
A battle not just of personalities, but of visions for the city’s future.
