SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Nine people were displaced from their home on Monday following a fire in Schenectady, according to the Schenectady Fire Department. The incident reportedly occurred on the 300 block of Germania Avenue.
Schenectady firefighters were dispatched to the scene just after 3:10 p.m. Upon arrival, crews reported heavy flames in the back of the structure.
Although firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the rear exterior, the inside of the home sustained smoke and water damage, authorities said.
Residents were quickly evacuated and no civilian injuries were reported. However, one firefighter was taken to Ellis Hospital with minor injuries, according to officials.
A total of six adults and three children were displaced from the building’s two households, authorities said. They are now being assisted by the American Red Cross.
According to an investigation, the fire began on the first-floor rear porch. The incident was deemed accidental due to improper use of fireworks by minors, the fire department said.
