A viral photo with a Ugandan politician who backed life imprisonment for same-sex relations raises questions about Mamdani’s political judgment and moral stance.
New York | October 5, 2025: New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism after a photo surfaced showing him smiling alongside Ugandan Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga, a politician known for supporting Uganda’s harsh anti-homosexuality law, which includes life imprisonment for same-sex relations.
The picture, reportedly taken during Mamdani’s wedding trip to Uganda in July, quickly spread online, sparking outrage among LGBTQ+ activists and human rights advocates.
Controversy and Response
Following the backlash, Mamdani’s campaign issued a statement claiming he was unaware of Kadaga’s involvement in anti-LGBTQ legislation.
“If he had known about her past stance, he would not have taken the photo,” his campaign said.
The statement also reaffirmed Mamdani’s long-standing support for LGBTQ+ rights and equality in New York City, vowing to continue his advocacy if elected mayor.
Background
Uganda’s 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act drew global condemnation for criminalizing same-sex relationships and imposing penalties up to life imprisonment.
Human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, have described the law as “state-sponsored persecution” against the LGBTQ+ community.
Analysis
Mamdani, widely known for his progressive politics and social justice advocacy, now faces questions about his political awareness and moral consistency.
Social media users and commentators have noted:
“Ignorance is no excuse for a leader — moral clarity must reflect in both words and actions.”
With the New York mayoral race heating up, analysts say this controversy could challenge Mamdani’s credibility among progressive voters.
