Trump Approves Deployment of National Guard in Chicago Amid ICE Clashes

News Desk: President Donald Trump has approved the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to Chicago following a violent confrontation between immigration enforcement agents and protesters in the city’s Brighton Park neighborhood.
The move comes despite opposition from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, who called it a politically motivated act rather than a genuine security measure.

Tensions Erupt During ICE Operation

The chaos began Friday evening when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted a raid that quickly escalated into clashes with demonstrators.
According to federal officials, a woman was shot after agents “fired defensively” when surrounded by vehicles and protesters attempting to block their movement.

The woman later drove herself to the hospital, where she was treated and placed under arrest. Authorities confirmed that she is in stable condition.

Local police responded to the scene but said that federal agencies are handling the investigation.

Governor Condemns Federal Action

Governor Pritzker criticized the deployment, saying, “This is not about safety — it’s about control.”
The White House, however, defended the decision, stating that the National Guard was being sent to “protect federal officers and facilities.”

If the troops are federalized under Title 10, they will not be permitted to perform direct law enforcement duties but may assist in securing federal personnel and property.

Protesters and Public Reaction

Witnesses said ICE officers used stun grenades and chemical agents to disperse the crowd.
“It felt like a war zone,” said a local resident. “We never expected to see something like this in our own neighborhood.”

Civil rights groups have condemned the escalation, warning that federal intervention in local affairs could increase tension and erode community trust.

National Context

The decision follows similar controversies in other cities, including Portland, where National Guard involvement has raised concerns about the balance of state and federal authority.

Federal and local officials are currently reviewing bodycam and surveillance footage as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident.
