A van attack near a major LGBTQ+ Pride celebration in Germany’s capital has left at least one person dead and 29 others injured, authorities said, raising fresh concerns over security at large public gatherings.
The incident occurred Saturday evening in the Tiergarten area of Berlin, near the site of the city’s annual Christopher Street Day Pride celebrations. According to authorities, a van drove into a crowd, causing multiple injuries. Several of those injured were reportedly in serious condition.
Police and investigators are searching for a suspect in connection with the incident. Authorities are investigating allegations that the suspect used the vehicle to strike people and later attacked with a knife. The suspect is considered potentially dangerous, and a search operation is underway.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said preliminary findings indicated that investigators were considering the possibility of an Islamist-motivated terrorist attack. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet established the full motive behind the incident.
The attack occurred as hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Berlin for Christopher Street Day, one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ Pride events. Following the incident, organizers canceled the closing celebrations and concerts and urged participants to leave the area safely.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner expressed deep sorrow over the incident and condemned the violence, stressing the importance of protecting freedom, openness and the right of people to live without fear.
Security measures at major public events are now expected to come under renewed scrutiny across Germany. Authorities are also assessing whether additional precautions are necessary to protect large gatherings in the wake of the attack.
The incident has drawn widespread concern among LGBTQ+ communities and human rights advocates, with calls for solidarity and vigilance. Despite the violence, organizers and supporters have emphasized that fear and intimidation should not undermine the values of equality, freedom and inclusion that Pride celebrations represent.
