Makhdum Sami Kallol, Kishoreganj: At least 17 people were killed after a freight train did not stop at a set of lights and smashed into three carriages of Egarosindhur Godhuli near Bhairab Bazar Junction Railway Station of Bangladesh.
Witnesses and officials of Bangladesh Railway said Egarosindhur, from Kishoreganj, departed Bhairab junction for Dhaka around 3:30pm and as it was changing to the main line when the freight train, heading towards Chattogram, hit the three rear carriages over a switch, which enables trains to change lines.
However, it is expected that it may take more than a day for the services to return to normal. Currently, trains are running at a speed of 10kmph on the accident-hit rail track. Trains will run at this speed until further notice.
In connection with the accident, Bangladesh Railway on Monday suspended the locomaster, assistant locomaster, and guard of the container train involved in the Bhairab train collision. On Monday evening, at least 17 people were killed and dozens were injured when a cargo train rammed into two bogies of a passenger train at Bhairab Rail Station in Kishoreganj.
