Mayor Zohran Mamdani, like the New York City mayors before him, will be in attendance at this week’s 9/11 memorial ceremony in Lower Manhattan.
The mayor confirmed his attendance on Monday ahead of the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn.
“I’m proud to be the mayor of this city. I love this city. I love this country,” Mamdani said. “What I want this week to be a focus on is on the families whose loved ones were stolen from them 25 years ago in the horrific act of terror of Sept. 11, and a focus also on the first responders who did everything they could.”
A small, but growing contingent of people have called for Mamdani to skip the 25th anniversary on Friday, including Rudy Giuliani, who over the weekend delivered an Islamophobic rant on Newsmax.
“The reality is, this ceremony is for the families and for America to remember, historically. Frankly, whatever he’d like to say, he doesn’t agree that September 11th was an Islamic terrorist attack on the United States of America,” Giuliani said. “Having lost friends there and being close to many of the families, it offends me that he’s coming.”
The former New York City mayor, who oversaw the city’s response to the terror attacks 25 years ago, made baseless assertions about Mamdani: “All the Muslims he supports are murderers.”
Mamdani declined to directly address Giuliani’s comments.
