Tragedy at Spring Street Station; Viral Video Raises Questions as NYPD Investigates

A 24-year-old Indian-origin woman and her longtime friend were killed after being struck by a subway train at Manhattan’s Spring Street Station early Sunday, with investigators working to determine how the two ended up on the tracks.
The victims were identified as Malaika Chitre, of Dayton, New Jersey, and Navam Kaul, of Sayreville, New Jersey. Both were former students of Rutgers University.
According to police and media reports, the two were on the tracks shortly after 3 a.m. on September 13 when a southbound No. 4 train entered the station. The train operator reportedly attempted to stop after seeing them, but was unable to avoid the collision. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Final Moments Captured on Video
A video circulating on social media appears to show Chitre and Kaul sitting on the subway tracks shortly before the train arrived.
The footage, however, does not establish how they got onto the tracks or why they were there. Investigators are examining surveillance footage and other evidence to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision.
Reports have raised the possibility that Kaul may have initially fallen onto the tracks and that Chitre went down in an attempt to help him. That remains an investigative possibility and has not been established as the official cause of the tragedy.
Questions Surrounding the Incident
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including what happened in the minutes before the train entered the station.
Some reports have also raised questions about whether alcohol or other factors may have affected the pair’s judgment. Authorities have not publicly concluded that alcohol was a factor, nor have they determined that the incident was intentional.
Two Promising Young Lives Lost
Chitre graduated from Rutgers University in 2024 and was working at Acadia Pharmaceuticals. She had also recently begun pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Temple University.
Kaul, also a Rutgers graduate, was working as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg.
Their sudden deaths have left their families, friends and wider communities mourning two young people whose professional lives were just beginning.
NYPD Investigation Continues
Following the incident, approximately 100 passengers aboard the train were reportedly evacuated to the platform.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, witness accounts and other evidence as they seek to determine exactly how the two ended up on the tracks.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal incident remain under investigation, and authorities have not announced a final determination on what led to the tragedy.
