Illinois and the city of Chicago have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump, seeking to block the deployment of federalized National Guard troops to Chicago.
Under Pentagon orders, 300 Illinois National Guard members and 400 from Texas were set to be federalized and deployed to Chicago. During a hearing, U.S. District Judge April Perry temporarily allowed the deployment to proceed, giving the federal government until Wednesday to respond to the lawsuit.
Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago officials argue that the deployment is unconstitutional and politically motivated, rather than a genuine public safety measure.
President Trump defended the action, warning that he could invoke the Insurrection Act if courts or local officials block federal efforts to restore order.
The legal and political battle continues to escalate, with other states also signaling challenges to Trump’s domestic military deployments.
