Britney Spears is ready to speak her truth following the end of her 13-year conservatorship in 2021, and she is doing so in a memoir titled The Woman in Me. The book, which is out now, sees Spears tell her life story and enduring legacy as a pop sensation.
The biggest revelations from The Woman in Me Britney Spears’ book The Woman in Me has been described as “a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope”.
Excerpts from the book were released by People on 17 October, bringing to light several of the bombshell revelations that will be in store for readers.
Her abortion In the preview, Spears shares how she became pregnant during her relationship with Justin Timberlake, but that she had an abortion because he “wasn’t happy about the pregnancy”.
Spears writes: “He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”
She ads: “If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”
Her conservatorship
Spears was put under a conservatorship by her father Jamie Spears in 2008, which gave him the ability to manage his daughter’s life in multiple ways.
It came to an end in November 2021 after sparking the singer’s passionate fanbase to launch the #FreeBritney movement.
In the book, Spears describes herself as being a “child robot” during her conservatorship, and candidly writes that she was “stripped” of her womanhood and infantilised by it.
In another excerpt, she writes: “I became more of an entity than a person onstage. I had always felt music in my bones and my blood; they stole that from me.”
Her-shaving incident
She also speaks about why she shaved her head in 2007 in an incident now infamous in showbiz history.
The singer explains that she felt she’d been “eyeballed so much growing up” and that shaving her hair off was a way of “pushing back” against this.
