Robert Pattinson’s film takes aim at ‘reality TV’s darkest era’ at the Venice Film Festival

Robert Pattinson delivers what critics are calling the performance of his career in Primetime, a jet-black media satire that premiered at the Venice Film Festival at the weekend and is already generating Oscar buzz.
Directed by Lance Oppenheim in his first narrative feature, the film draws on the real story behind the American television programme To Catch a Predator, which aired on Dateline NBC between 2004 and 2007.
The show staged sting operations targeting men who sought sexual contact with minors online, ambushing them on camera with a host whose charm masked something far more calculating, reports BBC.
Pattinson plays a fictionalised version of that host — not as a hero, but as something far stranger.
Oppenheim has described the character to BBC as a cross between Jerry Maguire and Dracula: slippery, self-satisfied, occasionally buffoonish, and quietly menacing.
Pattinson, who has spent years gravitating towards morally bankrupt, unsettling roles, appears entirely at home.
The film frames the show as a cultural turning point — the moment reality television shed any remaining pretence of public interest and became something grimmer.
According to the BBC, it raises uncomfortable questions about who benefits when the exposure of criminals is packaged as prime-time entertainment, and what it costs the people caught in the machinery around it.
The screenplay treats none of this as straightforward drama.
Primetime operates as a heightened, hallucinatory black comedy — disorienting and darkly funny in equal measure.
The real journalist on whom the film is based has criticised the project without having seen it, while simultaneously running advertisements before its US screenings promoting his own streaming service.
Pattinson’s year also includes roles in The Drama and The Odyssey, with Dune: Part Three still ahead.
