Even in defeat, a reclusive NJ Republican remained secluded to the last vote

Tom Kean went out quietly.

It was a familiar posture for the two-term Republican member of Congress.

Kean spent his election night party holed up in a swanky Basking Ridge hotel and banquet hall, banishing reporters from Gothamist and four other news outlets to the covered stone portico outside where a trickle of Republican Party officials passed through on their way into the gathering.

Many stopped near the wooden front doors to muse about their party’s chances. But their moods chilled as the temperature outside dropped and the election results rolled in. By 9:45 p.m., a steady flow of Kean supporters began leaving, muttering words like “depressing,” “grim” and “sad” to describe the mood.

Polls suggested that Republicans would face a tough election considered a referendum on President Donald Trump, whose favorability ratings have plummeted in New Jersey amid skyrocketing prices and an unpopular war with Iran. The polls proved correct, as Democratic challenger Rebecca Bennett defeated Kean to represent New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District.

Kean delivered a brief speech thanking his supporters and campaign staff, according to seven attendees. But former Morris County Executive Dick Kamin clarified, “It wasn’t a concession.”

Still, reporters couldn’t see or even hear it. Kean’s campaign did not provide access to a stream or recording of the closed-door meeting when asked after polls closed Tuesday.

The closed-door event mirrored the incumbent Republican’s public posturing throughout his four years in office.

Kean, the scion of a Jersey political dynasty, steadfastly refused to talk with the media during his two terms, at times greeting reporters’ persistent questioning with stone-faced silence.

Nor did Kean talk much with constituents. He did not hold town halls in the district, which spans a large swath of North Jersey from the edge of Staten Island to the Pennsylvania border, and he shunned most public appearances.

In March, he took an abrupt leave of absence from Congress, vanishing with no explanation and missing over 100 votes.

After months of speculation, Kean reemerged and returned to work in late June, explaining that he had been receiving treatment for serious depression.

Kean’s friends and supporters stood by him Tuesday, even as polls forecasted a loss.

Connie Wygara, a retiree serving on the Tewksbury school board, conceded that Kean was a “low-key” figure but said he nonetheless won victories for the district, like an increase to the State and Local Tax deduction, despite opposition from many other Republicans.

Business consultant Jacqui Cleary of Westfield described herself as a longtime friend of Kean’s and said she thought he did enough to connect with voters.

“He’s a thinker, and he keeps things brief,” Cleary said. “And so I’m okay with him being low-key. He’s effective in what he does.”

And Ruth Dilley, a retired school paraprofessional and Kean supporter from Readington Township, said she was unbothered by his low profile.

“Everyone’s personality is different,” Dilley said.
