CHINATOWN, Manhattan (WABC) — A Manhattan Supreme Court judge has temporarily banned late-night construction at a new jail site in Chinatown.
The ruling is a setback to the city’s timeline for building jails in four boroughs to replace Rikers Island.
Chinatown residents and advocates had sued over special permits allowing construction from 6 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, saying it disrupted sleep.
“Today a New York County Supreme Court judge validated what Chinatown has been saying for a long time: the City’s plans for years of nighttime drilling and overnight construction are dangerous to the surrounding community,” said Vic Lee, founder and CEO of Welcome to Chinatown.
The city has not commented on the ruling at this time.
The two sides are due back in court on December 1.
