$33.8 Million Project Plans Swimming Pool, Gymnasium and Expanded Opportunities for Children and Families
Sadia J. Choudhury:
— New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced $10 million in state funding for a new community center in Jackson Heights, Queens. The proposed facility is expected to expand access to educational programs, sports, recreation and community activities for children, families and residents of the diverse neighborhood.
According to the governor’s announcement, the funding will be administered through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) and support a project led by the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens. The initiative has secured approximately $33.8 million in public and private funding commitments to date, with an overall fundraising goal of about $60 million.
The planned community center will be located at 70-02 34th Avenue, at the former BQE Billiards site near Paseo Park. Proposed amenities include a gymnasium, basketball courts, a swimming pool and aquatic center, a theater, and spaces for recreation and community programming.
The facility is also expected to offer after-school programs, early childhood education, workforce development, health and wellness activities, and arts and cultural programming. Supporters say the center could provide young people with a safe place to learn, develop new skills, participate in sports and build relationships within their community.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of ensuring that children have access to safe spaces and quality opportunities regardless of their family’s income or background. The initiative also reflects the needs of Jackson Heights, a neighborhood known for its cultural diversity and large immigrant population.
The project’s funding package includes $10 million from New York State and $9.3 million from the New York City Council. U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand have secured a combined $2 million, while Congresswoman Grace Meng has contributed $1 million in support. State Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas has committed $1 million, while Assembly Members Steven Raga and Catalina Cruz have each provided $250,000. An additional $10 million from Metropolitan Park has been identified for site acquisition.
The planned center could become an important community resource for Jackson Heights and surrounding neighborhoods, particularly for families seeking accessible recreational, educational and cultural opportunities for their children.
Although the funding announcement marks a significant step forward, officials have not yet announced a definitive construction completion date. Once completed, the facility is expected to serve as a multipurpose hub for children, young people and families throughout the community.
