Powerful Storm Brings Severe Flooding, Beach Erosion and Widespread Power Outages Along the Jersey Shore
Ali Khan:
— A powerful nor’easter battered New Jersey’s coastal communities, bringing significant flooding, severe beach erosion and widespread power outages, while emergency crews carried out multiple rescues.
In Sea Bright, 67 people were rescued from floodwaters, including 45 residents who were evacuated from their homes. Rescue crews in Deal also worked through knee-deep water as coastal flooding inundated several communities.
Powerful waves caused significant erosion along the Jersey Shore, washing away large sections of beach in some areas. Atlantic City also saw substantial beach erosion as rough surf pounded the coastline.
The storm knocked down trees and power lines across parts of North Jersey, leaving thousands without electricity. About 2,400 customers remained without power Monday morning as utility crews continued restoration efforts.
Authorities warned residents in coastal and flood-prone areas to remain alert as another high-tide cycle approached. A state of emergency remained in effect in eight New Jersey counties as cleanup and recovery operations continued.
Officials urged residents to avoid flooded roads and stay away from areas affected by dangerous coastal conditions.
