Free Back-to-School Giveaway in Jackson Heights Brings Immigrant Families Together

Husneara Choudhury:
— As the new school year approaches, a simple act of generosity brought hundreds of immigrant families together Sunday evening in Jackson Heights, where children received free school supplies and a powerful message of community support.

Immigrants International Inc. hosted its free Back-to-School Supply Giveaway at Diversity Plaza on August 30, drawing families from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and other immigrant communities across Queens. Organizers said more than 200 people received essential school supplies during the event.

Children waited in long lines with their families before receiving backpacks and other school necessities, turning Diversity Plaza into a lively gathering of families, community advocates and local leaders.

Justice Thomas Raphael served as the chief guest. Attorney Moin Chowdhury was recognized for his support of the initiative. Among those attending were Tariqul Islam Mithu, Executive Director of American Bangladeshi Community Help Inc.; Mohammad Jabed Uddin, General Secretary of Astoria Welfare Society; M.A. Salam; along with community leaders, journalists, social workers and residents.

“This is not a donation; this is a community celebration,” said Moin Chowdhury, Chairperson of Immigrants International Inc.

Chowdhury said children are the future of the community and that seeing adults come together to help others can teach young people the value of service, compassion and civic responsibility.

The organization said the goal was not simply to provide school supplies, but to help children begin the new academic year with confidence and excitement. Chowdhury also said similar initiatives could be expanded in the future.

Community leaders praised the event as an example of how Queens’ diverse immigrant communities can come together around a common cause.

At a time when many families are facing rising everyday expenses, organizers said initiatives like this can make a meaningful difference—while reminding children that they are supported by the community around them.

In Jackson Heights, the message was clear: investing in children today means building a stronger Queens tomorrow.
