New York City— From morning debates to evening forums, New York’s political landscape was alive with discussions on transportation, justice reform, and business policy.
At a recent candidate forum, several contenders for NYC mayor outlined their priorities — with Rikers Island, bus service improvement, and tax reforms taking center stage.
Zohran Mamdani Pushes for Fare-Free Bus System
Progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani joined supporters on a Manhattan bus ride to highlight the need for a modern, accessible, and faster public transport system.
He emphasized that making buses fare-free would not only improve efficiency but also create greater social equity.
“If you had free buses, you’d be able to board and disembark from any one of the doors — that speeds it up,”
said Mamdani, adding that the move would “transform the experience for working New Yorkers.”
Transport Workers Union President John Samuelsen also endorsed the proposal, saying that fare-free buses could reduce the number of assaults on transit workers.
Rikers Island: To Close or Rebuild?
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that, if elected, he would not close Rikers Island but instead rebuild it into a modern and humane correctional facility.
“Rikers will be reimagined — rebuilt as a safer, more rehabilitative institution,” Cuomo said.
However, rival candidate Curtis Sliwa sharply criticized Cuomo for reversing his earlier stance, arguing that,
“Cuomo once supported shutting Rikers down — now he’s changing his tune. That’s political hypocrisy.”
Business and Tax Reform at the Core
Business leaders attending the event pressed candidates on how they plan to manage the city’s tax and regulatory environment.
Sliwa called for lower taxes and fewer regulations to help small businesses recover.
In contrast, Mamdani emphasized an equitable economy that benefits both workers and entrepreneurs:
“We must build a city where talent, creativity, and fairness thrive together,” he said.
Analysis and Outlook
This forum underscored three major themes shaping New York’s political future:

⬤ Rikers Island reform and accountability, and
⬤ Balanced economic and tax policy for sustainable growth.
Mamdani’s fare-free transit plan is gaining grassroots popularity but faces logistical and financial challenges. Meanwhile, the debate over Rikers Island continues to reveal deep ideological divides among candidates.
Ultimately, the city’s future will depend on leadership capable of balancing compassion, pragmatism, and progress — values that define the next generation of New Yorkers.
