New York – New York City mayoral candidate and Assembly member Zohran Mamdani has unveiled a major plan to protect immigrant rights. He pledged to increase the city’s legal defense funding for immigrant residents to over $100 million.
Currently, only 200 out of approximately 400,000 immigrant residents receive legal support—a figure Mamdani calls “extremely insufficient.” He noted that access to legal representation can increase immigrants’ chances of avoiding deportation by eleven times.
Last year, New York City spent over $60 million on legal services for immigrants, the highest in the country. The city has further increased the legal defense budget for the upcoming fiscal year and established a new office to manage these services. Mayor Eric Adams said, “In the United States, everyone deserves legal representation, but legal fees often put it out of reach for many.”
Mamdani added, “I am proud to be the city’s first immigrant mayoral candidate, representing a city where 40% of residents were born abroad.” He has criticized strict administrative and legal measures against immigrants and reaffirmed his strong commitment to defending immigrant rights. This initiative is expected to help make New York City a safer and more just city for immigrant communities.
