New York | August 5, 2025: In a pointed remark that has stirred political and community conversations, New York City Mayor Eric Adams questioned the presence—or lack thereof—of Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani at previous NYPD funerals.
The mayor’s comment came during a press briefing addressing public safety and community support for law enforcement. Referring to Mamdani’s recent vocal stance on policing matters, Adams asked, “Where was he at the last NYPD funerals? Where was the solidarity then?”
Mamdani, who represents parts of Queens and has been an outspoken advocate for police reform, has not yet issued a direct response. However, his office emphasized his ongoing commitment to community justice and public safety through legislative measures.
The mayor’s statement has drawn mixed reactions—some viewing it as a legitimate call for accountability, while others criticize it as a political jab aimed at a progressive lawmaker with a large immigrant constituency.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between City Hall and progressive lawmakers regarding the role and accountability of police in New York City.
As both sides double down on their positions, the broader community watches closely—especially as the city grapples with issues of safety, justice, and representation.
