Two people were killed Saturday morning in Manhattan’s Chinatown when a speeding car struck a cyclist and a pedestrian, police said. The tragic incident remains under investigation.
The Incident
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. near Canal Street and Bowery, in the busy Chinatown district. A blue Chevrolet Impala exiting the Manhattan Bridge at high speed lost control and first collided with a parked NYPD van. It then careened onto the sidewalk, striking a male cyclist and a female pedestrian.
Casualties and Response
Emergency services rushed to the scene and pronounced both victims dead at the site.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver and a passenger attempted to flee the scene, but were quickly apprehended by police.
Investigation Ongoing
NYPD stated that investigators are examining whether reckless driving, speed, or other factors contributed to the crash. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, and police said charges against the driver are pending.
