Entertainment Desk: Veteran actor and producer Robert De Niro is set to be honoured with an honorary Palme d’Or in recognition of his lifetime achievements at the opening ceremony of the 78th Festival de Cannes, as announced by the festival authorities, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The honour will be conferred on May 13, exactly 14 years after the two-time Academy Award winner presided over the Cannes jury in 2011.
De Niro shares a long-standing association with the prestigious festival.
In 1976, he appeared in two official selections—Bernardo Bertolucci’s “1900” and Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver”, the latter winning the Palme d’Or that year.
His Cannes journey continued with Scorsese’s “The King of Comedy” in 1983, followed by Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America” in 1984. In 1986, he returned with Roland Joffé’s “The Mission”, which earned him a second Palme d’Or-winning title.
Alongside receiving the honorary Palme d’Or, De Niro will also conduct a masterclass for festival attendees on Wednesday (May 14), at the Debussy Theatre.
The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 13 to May 24, 2025.
