NY1: Mayor Eric Adams applauded the work of the NYPD arresting Luigi Mangione, the person of interest in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
“Officers have been working around the clock, many of them did not go home to pursue this individual. It was crucial that we were able to remove him off the streets of America and that we were going to seek him out no matter where he was at the time,” he said Monday at a press conference.
The case drew national attention amid a multi-state manhunt. Adams billed Monday’s development as a major victory for the police department.
“How did we do it? Good old fashioned police work,” he said.
The arrest of Mangione came at the same time Daniel Penny was found not guilty in the chokehold subway death of Jordan Neely.
Despite the verdict, Adams said he still believes New Yorkers will remain good Samaritans.
“There’s a desire of New Yorkers to help those who are in need, there’s a desire of New Yorkers to always respond when they believe it’s necessary and I don’t think that’s going to change in any way,” he said.
Adams’ busy day also included his expectations for his upcoming meeting with President-elect Donald Trump’s border czar Tom Homan.
The two are set to meet on Thursday.
“The root of my conversation is how do we secure our border. I want to share some of my strategies, we need a real decompression strategy. It’s important that we go after those who commit serious crimes, particularly those gangs that have come from Venezuela. And now, we’re finding them on the streets of our country,” he said.
