Indianapolis-area operation targets undocumented immigrants; ICE cites criminal histories,
while officials provide limited details on convictions

Husneara Choudhury:

— U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 426 undocumented immigrants during a five-day immigration enforcement operation across Indiana, federal officials said.

The operation, known as “Operation Safe Community–Indiana,” was conducted from Aug. 30 through Sept. 3, with a significant portion of the enforcement activity concentrated in the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

According to ICE, those arrested included individuals with alleged or documented criminal histories involving sex offenses, assault, domestic violence, drug trafficking, weapons violations, burglary, fraud, identity theft and other offenses.

However, ICE has not released a detailed breakdown showing how many of the 426 people arrested had criminal convictions. The absence of a detailed breakdown makes it difficult to determine how many of those detained had been previously convicted of crimes and how many were arrested primarily on immigration-related grounds.

Local Law Enforcement Involvement

The operation involved cooperation between federal immigration authorities and local law-enforcement agencies across Indiana.

The cooperation reflects a broader effort in the state to increase coordination between local police departments and federal immigration authorities. By early September, 39 Indiana law-enforcement departments had entered cooperation agreements with ICE, according to information reported during the operation.

Such arrangements allow participating local agencies to assist federal immigration authorities under specified circumstances.

Indianapolis Officials Raise Concerns

The intensified enforcement activity has also drawn concern from local officials in Indianapolis.

Mayor Joe Hogsett said the city had not received advance notice of the increased federal enforcement activity. His administration has continued to express support for immigrant communities in the city.

Immigrant-rights advocates and legal-services organizations have also raised concerns about the growing involvement of local law enforcement in federal immigration enforcement, particularly over its potential impact on immigrant communities and access to due process.

Part of a Broader National Enforcement Surge

The Indiana operation comes amid a significant expansion of immigration enforcement across the United States.

ICE arrests have risen sharply during 2026, with more than 49,000 arrests recorded in July, according to federal immigration data. Data from the period also indicated that a substantial share of those arrested nationally had no criminal record.

The increase in arrests has intensified the national debate over immigration enforcement, detention, cooperation between federal and local authorities, and the legal rights of people facing removal proceedings.

What Happens After an ICE Arrest?

People arrested by ICE may be transferred to immigration detention and placed in removal or deportation proceedings. The legal circumstances vary from case to case, and individuals may have the opportunity to present claims or defenses before an immigration court.

The Indiana operation highlights the expanding role of federal immigration enforcement in local communities and the growing cooperation between ICE and state and local law-enforcement agencies.

It also underscores the continuing debate over how immigration laws are enforced, how criminal history is weighed in enforcement decisions, and what legal protections are available to people facing detention and possible deportation.
