Anadolu: The US House Oversight Committee has subpoenaed former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to testify about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Fox News Digital reported Tuesday.
Committee Chair James Comer sent multiple Epstein-related subpoenas Tuesday morning, according to the outlet. The Republican from the state of Kentucky also subpoenaed the Justice Department for records related to the Epstein case.
Former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller are among those compelled to appear, along with former attorneys general Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, William Barr, Jeff Sessions and Alberto Gonzales, Fox News reported.
Testimony schedule set
The network reported that Hillary Clinton must appear Oct. 9, while Bill Clinton was given an Oct. 14 date. Sessions and Barr, who served under Donald Trump, received Aug. 18 and Aug. 28 dates, respectively.
Barack Obama-era officials Lynch and Holder face Sept. 19 and Sept 30 appearances, while former Joe Biden Attorney General Merrick Garland is scheduled for Oct. 2 and former George Bush’s Attorney General Gonzales faces Aug. 26 date for the testimony.
The Justice Department has until Aug. 19 to provide Epstein-related records, it said.
A House subcommittee voted last month to authorize the subpoenas. Comer previously followed through on subpoenaing convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell but agreed to delay her deposition pending her Supreme Court petition. Maxwell, 63, who was an associate of Epstein, is serving 20 years in prison for conspiring to sexually abuse minors. She filed an appeal with the US Supreme Court on her 2021 conviction for conspiring with Epstein to traffic underage girls, arguing that a federal immunity agreement should have protected her from prosecution.
Epstein mingled with the wealthy and powerful, including prominent politicians, for decades before he pleaded guilty in 2008 to felony solicitation and procuring a person under the age of 18 for prostitution. Trump’s Make America Great Again allies, the phrase he popularized during his presidential runs, have for years loudly clamored for the release of the government’s Epstein records as they speculate that the files incriminate high-profile individuals.
Epstein, awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, was found dead Aug. 10, 2019, in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York. The death was ruled a suicide.
