Sept. 27, 2025 — Miami Mayor Francis Suarez recently compared New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani to Fidel Castro, warning that electing Mamdani could lead the city “down a very dark path.”
Suarez’s Remarks
• Suarez, whose father fled Cuba as an immigrant, told the Miami Post: “New York City is going down a very dark path, and it is sad.”
• He added, “Some people say — and I am not one of them — that electing a socialist mayor might be good for America. But I don’t want people to suffer for that.”
• According to Suarez, socialism often leads to widespread poverty, suffering, and oppression, as evidenced by Cuba’s history.
Proposed Path and Plans
• The Miami mayor emphasized maintaining the city as a free-market model.
• Suarez plans to host the “America Business Forum” in November, bringing together business leaders and policymakers.
Response
• Mamdani’s campaign has not yet responded to Suarez’s comments.
• The remarks have sparked new political tension in New York City’s mayoral race.
