NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — New York City recorded the fewest shootings, shooting victims and murders on record during the first nine months of 2026, according to crime statistics released Tuesday by the NYPD.
Through September, the city recorded 489 shooting incidents, 594 shooting victims and 203 murders, all record lows for the first nine months of a year, according to the NYPD. Compared with 2021, 846 fewer people were shot during the same period.
Major crime also declined 6.6% citywide compared with the same period last year, falling from 92,057 reported incidents to 86,023. Every borough saw a decline, with the Bronx posting the largest decrease at 11.9%.
The downward trend continued in the year’s third quarter. The city recorded 167 shooting incidents, 213 shooting victims and 73 murders between July and September, each the lowest total on record for that period. Major crime fell 9.4% during the quarter.
Several major crime categories posted year-over-year declines, including burglary, robbery, grand larceny and auto theft. Robbery dropped 12.2%, burglary fell 13.7%, grand larceny declined 5.8% and auto theft decreased 12.4%.
Not every category moved in the same direction. Felony assaults rose 0.2% from a year earlier, while reported rapes increased 3.7%. Police said some of the increase in rape reports involved crimes that occurred in prior years and were reported more recently.
Confirmed hate crimes increased 12.9% through the first nine months of the year, according to the NYPD. More than half of those incidents were anti-Jewish hate crimes.
