NEW YORK, October 27— The New York Police Department (NYPD) honored 194 officers on Monday for their extraordinary bravery and swift action during the Midtown mass shooting, which could have claimed many more lives if not for their courage and composure under fire.
The recognition ceremony, held at One Police Plaza, celebrated officers from the Emergency Service Unit, Highway Patrol, Detective Bureau, and various precincts who responded heroically to the chaotic scene, rescuing civilians and neutralizing the threat.
Police Commissioner Edward Caban praised the honorees, saying,
“They are not just men and women in uniform — they represent the highest ideal of the department. Their courage and selflessness that night embody what it means to protect this city.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who attended the ceremony, echoed that sentiment:
“These officers are the backbone of New York’s safety. Their quick action and bravery prevented an even greater tragedy. Once again, they showed the world that New York City never bows to fear.”
A moment of silence was also observed in memory of those who lost their lives in the attack and to honor the wounded.
In Reflection:
The ceremony was not just a tribute to individual acts of bravery — it stood as a reminder of the unity, resilience, and indomitable spirit that define New York City.
