New York: New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani has announced that he and his wife Rama Duwaji will move into the city’s historic official mayoral residence, Gracie Mansion, following his swearing-in on January 1. The decision marks not only a continuation of the mayoral tradition but also a strategic step toward ensuring safety, accessibility, and effective governance in the coming term.
Security & Governance — the primary reasons
Mamdani stated that the demands of mayoral responsibility, along with significantly heightened security needs, require a residence equipped to manage the logistical and administrative weight of the office. Gracie Mansion provides secure grounds, designated meeting areas, and facilities designed for official city business.
“For the safety of my family and to better serve the people of New York, I’ve made the decision to move into Gracie Mansion,”
said the Mayor-Elect.
An emotional farewell to Astoria
Until now, Mamdani and his wife lived in a rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria, Queens—a place the Mayor-Elect frequently described as his true home throughout the campaign. The move, he admitted, comes with emotional weight.
“We’re leaving Astoria, but Astoria will always stay with us—in our hearts, in our work, and in our commitment to this city,”
Mamdani added.
Transition after public debate
During the campaign, Mamdani’s rent-stabilized apartment drew public
discussion, with critics questioning whether a high-profile elected official should reside in such a unit. He clarified that he initially moved in under a prior income level and that the debate emerged only after his rise in public office.
Political observers note that moving into Gracie Mansion signals a shift from campaigning to governing—a message that the Mayor-Elect is now prioritizing full executive responsibility.
Gracie Mansion — a symbol of NYC leadership
The 11,000-square-foot residence, located in Manhattan, has served as the official home of New York City’s mayors for decades. It is a central venue for cultural events, diplomatic receptions, and key administrative functions. By moving in, Mamdani joins a historic lineage of city leaders who have used the mansion as both a home and a command center.
