New York, October 13, 2025: Following the release of 20 Israeli citizens from Hamas captivity in Gaza, New York politicians hailed the event as “a new chapter of lasting peace.” The historic release came after a peace agreement mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump, establishing a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Among the freed hostages were Aviyatar David, who had been forced to dig his own grave during captivity, and Avinatan Or and Noa Argamani, whose heart-wrenching separation in the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks had captured global attention.
New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani praised the agreement but also stressed the need for a fair and just future, stating, “Our goal must be a society where every individual can live safely and with dignity.”
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa condemned Hamas’ actions while calling the release a moral and humanitarian victory.
Governor Kathy Hochul added, “This release opens the door for humanitarian aid to reach the people of Gaza and could mark the beginning of lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.”
Under the first phase of the agreement, Israel has released 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Future phases include plans for Hamas’ disarmament and the deployment of international peacekeeping forces in Gaza.
