New York, October 27, 2025— The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has issued a warning about the rising use of fake IDs, citing an escalating identity theft crisis across the state.
According to the DMV, more than 340 fake IDs were confiscated at various concert venues across New York in 2025. These actions were part of the DMV’s annual “Operation Prevent” campaign, aimed at raising awareness about underage drinking and driving violations.
DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder emphasized,
“Young people need to think carefully before sharing their most sensitive personal information online, because those intent on breaking the law can steal and sell your identity.”
Experts note that purchasing fake IDs online is not only illegal but also significantly increases the risk of identity theft, which can lead to long-term personal and financial consequences.
The DMV has reminded the public that buying or using a fake ID is a serious legal offense and can result in severe repercussions in the future.
