Husneara Choudhury: — Millions of New Yorkers could soon receive financial relief from rising household energy costs as the state prepares to distribute $1 billion in utility rebate payments through a new statewide program.
Under the POWER (Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate) program, eligible New York residents will receive a one-time rebate of up to $200. The payments are expected to reach approximately 8.2 million residents, with checks scheduled to be mailed in phases between September and December 2026.
Who Qualifies and How Much Will They Receive?
The amount of the rebate will depend primarily on household income and tax-filing status.
Under the announced payment structure:
* Married couples filing jointly with annual income below $150,000 may receive $200.
* Joint filers with income between $150,000 and $300,000 may receive $150.
* Single filers with annual income below $150,000 may receive $100.
The payments are intended to provide direct financial assistance to eligible households facing higher electricity, gas and other utility costs.
No Separate Application Expected
One of the key features of the program is that eligible residents generally will not need to submit a separate application.
State officials are expected to use information from existing state tax records to determine eligibility. Qualified residents will then receive their rebate checks by mail.
Residents should therefore keep an eye on their mailboxes beginning in September and continuing through the end of the year.
2024 Tax Information Plays a Key Role
Eligibility for the POWER rebate will be determined using information from eligible taxpayers’ 2024 New York State income tax returns.
That means the income information reported for the applicable tax year will be important in determining whether a resident qualifies and how much they receive.
Residents who filed a 2024 state tax return should make sure their tax information and mailing address are accurate and up to date.
Not Everyone Will Qualify
Although the program is expected to reach millions of New Yorkers, not every resident will be eligible.
People whose income exceeds the established limits, as well as those who do not meet other program requirements, may not receive a payment.
Some residents who did not file a required state tax return may also be excluded from the automatic payment process.
Why Is New York Providing the Rebate?
The program comes as households continue to face significant costs for electricity, natural gas and other essential services.
State officials say the rebate is intended to provide immediate financial relief and help New Yorkers manage the growing cost of living.
