New York : Mayor Eric Adams has announced that all city agencies will start using advanced language technology. This initiative ensures that residents who are not fluent in English can access government services, schools, police, and healthcare more easily and effectively.
Key Initiatives
• Over 100,000 smart devices will be equipped with translation apps, including Google Translate and Apple Translate.
• Police officers and city staff will use real-time translation apps to communicate efficiently with residents.
• A new school app, Hello, is being developed to provide translation and interpretation services in 12 major languages for students and their families.
Purpose and Significance
Mayor Adams stated:
“We want to make New York the world’s most language-friendly city, ensuring every resident can easily access city services, regardless of the language they speak.”
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said:
“Clear language communication is essential for public safety. By using real-time translation, we can deliver faster, clearer, and more effective services.”
The Department of Education added that this initiative will help overcome language barriers between schools and families, increasing parental engagement in students’ education.
