In a significant breakthrough in New York City’s ongoing battle against gun violence, Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban Tisch jointly announced the seizure of more than 3,000 illegal firearms since the beginning of the year. This milestone underscores the administration’s renewed focus on public safety and the effectiveness of targeted policing efforts across the five boroughs.
At a press briefing held at NYPD Headquarters on Monday, Mayor Adams praised the tireless work of law enforcement officers.
“Every illegal gun taken off the street is a life potentially saved. Our officers are working day and night to keep New Yorkers safe,” said the Mayor.
Commissioner Tisch echoed his sentiments, stating:
“This isn’t just about numbers — this is about neighborhoods, about families, about children who deserve to grow up free from fear. We are removing tools of violence before they can be used.”
According to NYPD data, most of the seized weapons were recovered through precision policing, anonymous tips, traffic stops, and ongoing investigations. Several arrests have been made in connection with illegal gun trafficking networks, many of which span across state lines.
The Mayor also emphasized the need for federal cooperation, particularly in controlling the flow of illegal firearms from other states.
“New York has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, but our efforts are undermined when guns continue to pour in from elsewhere,” Adams noted.
Community leaders and advocacy groups have welcomed the announcement but continue to call for investment in youth programs, mental health support, and community-based violence prevention strategies.
As the city moves forward, both Mayor Adams and Commissioner Tisch reaffirmed their administration’s commitment to making New York City safer, smarter, and stronger.
