Tragedy at Utica Avenue station leaves man in his 50s dead; MTA investigating how rider became trapped

Salman J. Choudhury:
— A man in his 50s was killed Monday evening after he was dragged by a southbound A train at the Utica Avenue subway station in Bedford-Stuyvesant when his bag became caught in the train’s closing doors, authorities said.
The incident occurred shortly before 5:50 p.m. at the Utica Avenue station near Fulton Street. According to investigators, the man’s bag became trapped in the doors of an A train as it was preparing to leave the station.
It was not immediately clear whether the man was attempting to board the train or was getting off when the incident occurred.
As the train began moving, the man was pulled along the platform and struck a pole, suffering severe trauma. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the station.
Authorities had not immediately released the victim’s identity.
The fatal incident prompted an investigation by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, including how the rider became caught in the train doors as the train prepared to depart.
The incident serves as another tragic reminder of the dangers that can arise when passengers or belongings become caught in subway doors. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the departure of the train and determine exactly how the man’s bag became trapped.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected as authorities review the circumstances of the incident.
